If a client was spending all their time and energy focused on their addiction(s before getting sober, where does that leave them in recovery? What will they be focusing on now? If their identity was wrapped up in their addiction, then who are they as they begin their recovery journey? Indeed, many clients feel at a loss early in their recovery as they seek to understand and embrace this new version of themselves.

At the same time that a client starts to address the root of their addiction, they must also rebuild their identity. Reinvent themselves. Find new meaning and purpose in their lives. For that is what will keep them sober. In this training, you will learn the ingredients that make up successful recovery from addictive and compulsive behavior. We will explore how clients can redefine who they are–now that they are sober. We can also assist clients in remembering who they once were, before the traumas, before the addiction started. We can empower them to look beneath the adaptive self to connect with their authentic essence.

We will discuss the nature of change, the importance of mindfulness, how to access authentic values, how to recognize and replace limiting beliefs with empowering ones, how to cultivate self-compassion, how to manage cravings, the role of spirituality in recovery, the importance of emotional intelligence, and more.

Ultimately, you’ll leave with a recovery roadmap to share with clients. Where that roadmap leads, a client is in the direction of the best version of themselves and a life worth living. This training will be interactive and experiential; please have a notebook or app open to take notes.

Objectives:

  • Identify the stages of change and their relation to recovery from addictions.

  • Discuss ways to assist clients in connecting with core values.
