Some clients aren’t found on Freud’s chaise – they are more suited to cribs, highchairs, and child carriers. They have the same difficulty managing their emotions, establishing healthy relationships, and behaving appropriately as the rest of us, but how would you go about helping a baby or toddler?

This workshop will give therapists and other professionals working with very young children an understanding of Infant Mental Health and interventions for clients 0-5 years of age. We will particularly focus on at-risk populations and the impacts of abuse, neglect, and loss.

Teaching modalities include clinical discussions, lectures, readings, videos, group exercises, and sharing resources.

Objectives:

• Understand the definition of infant mental health in the context of early childhood development.

• Discuss attachment theory and examine traumatic impacts on early brain development.

• Explore the dyadic nature and clinical applicability of infant mental health.

• Review the DC:0-5, diagnostic thinking, and assessment for this population.

• Utilize parent-infant psychotherapy and child-parent psychotherapy as clinical interventions with young children in practice.
