Setting and maintaining healthy boundaries is one of the most crucial—and challenging—aspects of clinical practice. Too often, therapists struggle to find the balance between being compassionate and maintaining professional boundaries that protect both the therapist and the client. This introductory training explores the ethical and practical aspects of boundary-setting in therapy, offering tools and strategies to create clear, respectful, and effective boundaries. We will examine common boundary challenges, such as dual relationships, self-disclosure, and emotional entanglement, and learn how to navigate them with confidence and care. Through case discussions and real-world examples, you will gain the skills to protect the integrity of the therapeutic relationship while promoting trust, safety, and respect.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Develop an understanding of the ethical, legal, and practical aspects of boundary-setting in clinical practice.
  2. Learn strategies for maintaining professional boundaries while fostering a compassionate and supportive therapeutic relationship.
  3. Identify common boundary violations and challenges, and explore effective ways to address them with clients.
  4. Practice setting and maintaining boundaries through self-reflection and case-based discussions to ensure a safe, respectful therapeutic environment.
