This training provides an overview of evidence-based strategies designed to help individuals overcome substance dependence.

The addiction field is rapidly changing, in terms of new treatment approaches coming to the foreground. Therefore, the goal of this training is for participants to gain an understanding of the various modalities that make up addiction treatment, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), contingency management (CM), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), SMART Recovery, psychedelics and more. The training will cover the mechanisms behind these interventions, their application in diverse clinical settings, and the importance of personalized treatment plans that consider the unique needs of each client.

In addition, we will explore current trends regarding the usage of particular substances and their administration, in terms of emergent addictive substances and behaviors. For those in the addiction and recovery field, it can be helpful to understand this landscape, as it will impact the nature of intervention and treatment.

Objectives:

  • Identify a wide range of treatment modalities for substance use disorders
  • Understand the mechanisms of change for treatment modalities
  • Discuss which interventions are most appropriate depending on the population being served
  • Explore current trends in substance use and addictive behaviors
