Continuing Education Workshop Description:
This continuing education workshop provides mental health professionals with an in-depth exploration of the aging brain, including a review of neurocognitive disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, and mild cognitive impairment. Participants will examine key factors influencing cognitive aging, such as genetics, lifestyle, chronic illness, and psychosocial stressors. The course highlights practical ways clinicians can support older adults through early identification, cognitive assessments, caregiver collaboration, and person-centered care. Evidence-based clinical recommendations and communication strategies will be discussed, along with an introduction to optimal care models that integrate medical, psychological, and social support systems to enhance quality of life for aging individuals and their families.
Continuing Education Workshop Objectives:
- Explain patterns of brain changes associated with aging and the relationship between brain aging, cognitive functioning, and functional abilities.
- Define core aspects of DSM-5 Neurocognitive Disorder assessment procedures and practices
- Identify at least five modifiers of age-related brain changes, and identify at least three ways that clinicians can support brain health in clients.
