This workshop is a continuation of the workshop, “Introduction to Nature-based Therapy: More Than a Walk in the Park.”

Whether you already have a foundational understanding of nature-based therapy or ecotherapy from taking the Introductory course with Becky or elsewhere, the Advanced Applications of Nature-based and Ecotherapy course offers participants the opportunity for a deep dive into the concepts and application of nature-based therapy (NBT) and ecotherapy (ET) techniques. This day-long course is designed for therapists who want to deepen their skills and understanding.

The course explores advanced ecological, psychological, and nature-informed theories and concepts, as well as practical techniques and strategies for integrating them into therapeutic practices. Participants will learn to apply advanced nature-based interventions, address cultural and ethical considerations, and combine somatic approaches, expressive arts therapy, polyvagal theory, and nature-focused therapy. Through interactive lectures, experiential exercises, and case discussions, therapists will acquire practical tools to enhance client outcomes by harnessing the healing power of nature.

Participants in this advanced course will deepen their understanding, apply the techniques, and leave feeling more confident in the application and integration of nature-based and ecotherapy in client sessions. In addition to learning advanced applications of nature-based therapy to enhance therapeutic outcomes for your clients, you will also learn how YOU benefit as a therapist by inviting Nature to be your co-therapist.

Objectives:

  • Deepen theoretical understanding by exploring advanced ecological and psychological theories, including biophilia, ecopsychology, and polyvagal theory.
  • Learn and practice specific ecotherapy methods, including the therapeutic use of somatic nature-based interventions and expressive arts activities in nature-based therapy.
  • Recognize the impact of cultural and ecological diversity in nature-based practices. Incorporate cultural sensitivity and awareness into nature-based therapy to meet the needs of culturally diverse clients.
  • Integrate ecotherapy with complementary modalities, including somatic practices, polyvagal-informed approaches, and expressive arts interventions to create holistic, client-centered treatment plans.
  • Navigate ethical and logistical challenges, such as ensuring client safety in outdoor settings, managing the potential risks involved, and modifying nature-based approaches to make ecotherapy accessible to all clients.
  • Measure nature-based therapy outcomes. Document client progress through evidence-based approaches and evaluate the effectiveness of ecotherapy interventions.
