Somatic psychotherapies rest on the understanding that the body holds important keys to healing trauma, stress, and emotional distress. This continuing education workshop will introduce psychotherapists to some of the most widely practiced somatic approaches (including Somatic Experiencing, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, EMDR, Brainspotting, Hakomi Method, and Emotional Freedom Technique).

Participants will gain a foundational understanding of how these methods view the mind-body connection, the role of bodily sensations in emotional regulation, and the ways somatic awareness can deepen therapeutic work.

The goal of this training is to provide a broad overview so clinicians can compare approaches and make informed decisions about which somatic modalities align with their interests, client needs, and practice settings. Participants will leave with a clearer map of the somatic therapy landscape and concrete ideas for integrating body-oriented awareness into their current clinical work.

Workshop Objectives:

  • Develop an understanding of the core principles shared across somatic psychotherapies.
  • Gain introductory knowledge of several popular approaches (e.g., Somatic Experiencing, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, EMDR, Brainspotting, EFT).
  • Compare and contrast the theoretical foundations, methods, and applications of different somatic modalities.
  • Learn practical entry-point strategies for incorporating body awareness and regulation techniques into therapy sessions.
