Continuing Education Workshop Description:

Writing letters for gender-affirming care is a critical skill for mental health professionals, requiring both clinical precision and affirming language.

This brief but information-packed continuing education workshop introduces psychotherapists to best practices for composing letters that support clients seeking hormone therapy, surgery, or other gender-affirming interventions. Participants will explore ethical considerations, professional documentation standards, and how to balance thorough assessment with affirming client-centered language.

Through examples, discussion, and practical exercises, attendees will learn strategies for structuring letters, documenting relevant clinical information, and communicating support in ways that respect clientsโ€™ identities. Therapists will leave with practical tools and templates to write clear, professional, and affirming letters that facilitate access to gender-affirming care while maintaining ethical and clinical integrity.

Continuing Education Workshop Objectives:

  1. Develop an understanding of the ethical, clinical, and legal considerations in writing letters for gender-affirming care.
  2. Learn best practices for structuring letters, documenting relevant clinical information, and using affirming language.
  3. Identify ways to balance thorough assessment with client-centered, supportive communication in letters for gender-affirming care.
