It is common for people living with Generalized Anxiety, Health Anxiety, OCD, Panic, and Specific Phobias to be referred to evidence-based treatments such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). Many people, including referring clinicians, may be hesitant, even fearful, about this model. It also can be challenging, especially post-pandemic, to find therapists who both understand the complexities of anxiety related diagnoses and to be skilled in the treatments. CBT and ERP, done well, can be caring, fun and life-changing for sufferers.

Evidence-based models are important, helpful, and often what gets clients their therapy covered by insurance. This workshop is a call to action for arts and creative therapies to not be lost or left behind by the mental health field. This course integrates creative approaches to evidence based modalities in order to further access to efficient and engaging mental health care. Art and creative modalities can provide many benefits to an individual’s therapy. CBT and ERP can be further strengthened as treatments for anxiety and related disorders by using art-based exploration of cognitive strategies, visually depicting experiences of symptoms, emotion regulation skill strengthening, exposure through visual and material use, and garnering motivation for therapy engagement. Clinicians can gain insight into a client’s experience, understand symptoms, and strengthen the therapeutic relationship by using art-based and creative interventions.

With a skilled clinician’s guidance and understanding, clients can use arts-based directives to map out symptoms, gain a deeper understanding of diagnosis, imagine a life with less symptoms, practice exposure through the art making process, and represent their inner experiences of coexisting with diagnosis. Art and creative interventions can also be applied to cognitive strategies: cognitive fusion, cognitive distortions, cognitive reframing, thought challenging, and more!

In this course, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of Generalized Anxiety, Health Anxiety, OCD, Panic, and Specific Phobias. Participants will learn about the basics of ERP treatment, assessment, how to adapt treatment appropriately based on age of clients, and effectively apply art and creative directives to the tenets of CBT.

Understanding the nuances of these diagnoses and how they function is important to truly help clients live a more full life driven by values instead of fears! Participants will walk away with a portfolio of art based tools to further clinical practices with clients.
