Religion and spirituality can be central sources of meaning, coping, and identity for many clients, yet they are often overlooked or sidelined in therapy. This introductory continuing education workshop helps psychotherapists understand how to ethically and effectively engage with clients’ spiritual and religious experiences in a client-centered way. Participants will explore the ways spirituality can influence mental health, resilience, and relational dynamics, as well as how to navigate personal biases and maintain professional boundaries.

Attendees will learn strategies to integrate clients’ spiritual and religious perspectives into therapy, enhancing therapeutic alliance and promoting holistic well-being. Therapists will leave with practical tools to respectfully explore spirituality in assessment, treatment planning, and interventions, supporting clients in aligning their values, meaning, and growth.

Workshop Objectives:

  • Develop an understanding of the influence of religion and spirituality on clients’ mental health, coping, and identity.
  • Learn strategies to ethically and effectively explore clients’ spiritual and religious experiences in therapy.
  • Identify ways to integrate spiritual and religious perspectives into assessment, treatment planning, and interventions to support holistic well-being.
