Continuing Education Workshop Description:
This continuing education workshop provides therapists with a practical and clinically grounded approach to homicide risk assessment across outpatient, crisis, and behavioral health settings.
Participants will learn how to identify warning signs and risk factors associated with potential violence. The workshop will explore strategies for opening the door to difficult conversations about violent thoughts in a direct, nonjudgmental, and therapeutic manner while maintaining rapport and reducing client shame or defensiveness.
Clinicians will also review levels of homicide risk, protective factors, documentation considerations, duty to warn/protect issues, and appropriate next steps including safety planning, consultation, referral, crisis intervention, and coordination of care.
Case examples and clinical scenarios will help participants increase confidence in assessing, conceptualizing, and responding to homicide risk in ethically and legally informed ways.
Continuing Education Workshop Objectives:
- Analyze clinical, behavioral, and contextual factors associated with varying levels of homicide risk in behavioral health settings.
- Demonstrate therapeutic interviewing strategies to assess homicidal ideation and determine appropriate clinical interventions and next steps.
