This course explores the ethical complexities surrounding the giving and receiving of gifts within therapeutic relationships. Clinicians will examine professional boundaries, ethical guidelines, and potential impacts on the therapeutic alliance when navigating gift-related situations.
The training will address how to assess the intent, timing, and meaning of gifts, and offer best practices for decision-making rooted in ethical principles and clinical judgment. Participants will engage in reflective examination of their own cultural values, beliefs, and professional roles, while considering the diverse cultural norms and practices of clients. Through discussion and case analysis, this course fosters ethical awareness and culturally sensitive approaches to managing gift-related dilemmas in therapy.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify ethical and therapeutic issues of gift giving and receiving in mental health practice.
- Explain at least three key ethical and practice considerations around gift giving in practice.
- Discover and consider variables related to culture, therapeutic relationships, and countertransference as they relate to gifts.
