Group therapy practice can be one of the most helpful modalities out there – but what do you do when you have a variety of people in one room with varying abilities, presentations, and cultures? Throw HIPAA in the mix and the prospect may be daunting!
The truth is, everyone is a unique individual and discernment, skill and confidence can help in any “one-off” or new situation. That said, there are some basic skills that you, as provider, can identify and apply to group situations without necessarily knowing the individual differences, such as neurodivergent, Queer, multicultural, and/or disabled.
This session will provide easily accessible and usable information for how to formulate, organize, and conduct groups with a variety of backgrounds as well as how to properly set up an “Affinity-based” group. We will also discuss age differences (youth/adolescent/geriatric group members).
If you want to increase your confidence in running groups, this is the session for you!
Objectives:
- Explain the steps and questions needed to properly conduct inclusive pre-group work (Screening, Agreement Formulation, Etc)
- Describe implicit bias common to group members and facilitators and develop methods to proactively address them
- Create group therapy structures that enhance inclusion and cohesion in group with diverse members
- Apply knowledge in real-time group-related activities with immediate feedback
