Despite Julia Robert’s assertion to Richard Gere in Pretty Woman, home is NOT just geography. Most importantly, it’s about relationships – the ones we build, the ones we lose, and the ones we nurture despite the challenges of distance or system involvement.

Dealing with the inherent issues of separation and transition in the foster care system, this workshop will address ways to protect connections, prioritize relationships, and buffer the experience of loss. With a focus on our kids’ experience of the world, we’ll explore the following:

  • Visits, separations, and transitions with relationships as the focus
  • Unique exposure to grief & loss
  • Healthy transitions with tools & resources
  • Impacts of placement moves at different stages
  • Effective communication with children
  • Reconsideration of permanence, family relationships & “open” adoption

The audience for this workshop includes mental health therapists, social workers, caregivers, and any pediatric providers caring for system-involved children. There will be videos and case vignettes to illustrate, as well as tons of tools and resources provided (because your jobs are hard enough!).
