Early Childhood Mental Health: Therapy with Infants, Toddlers, Preschoolers & Littles

Some clients aren’t found on Freud’s chaise – they are more suited to cribs, highchairs, and childcares. They have the same difficulty managing their emotions, establishing healthy relationships, and behaving appropriately as the rest of us – but how do we go about helping a baby or kindergartener?  This class will provide therapists and other professionals working with young children with an understanding of Early Childhood Mental Health and interventions for clients aged 0-5.

This full-day workshop will be conducted in a Zoom format, and teaching modalities will include a mix of clinical discussion, lecture with tons of case examples & video illustrations, as well as small & large group case exercises.

Workshop Objectives:

  • Understand the role of EHMC (a.k.a Infant Mental Health) in the overall context of early childhood development.
  • Consider attachment patterns and their clinical presentations in early childhood.
  • Review the DC:0-5R, diagnostic thinking, and assessment for this population. (The Ethical Assessment in Early Childhood Mental Health & Development class is highly recommended in collaboration with this intervention class.)
  • Explore developmentally focused models of dyadic ECMH interventions.
  • Utilize Parent-Infant Psychotherapy and Child-Parent Psychotherapy as clinical interventions with young children in practice.
  • Address common self-regulation concerns that present in early childhood.
  • Introduce reflective supervision as a key characteristic of success with ECMH work.
