Vicarious Traumatization, Secondary Trauma, burn out. Diminished feelings of satisfaction, blaming others, hopelessness, low motivation-working in the counseling profession has its own set of stressors. Over time, therapists may notice that it becomes harder to listen to client’s stories or even that they become “numb” to the details of their client’s difficulties. There are many symptoms that are known as the cost of working in the caring professions. Once thought of as being a sign of incomplete clinical training, Vicarious Traumatization is now recognized as one of the possible experiences of hearing about “the worst of the worst” for a living.
This training will offer many theoretical view points on the topic. Every theory has its own view on why we take our work home with us. We will discuss how Psychoanalytic, Jungian, Narrative, and Mindfulness based theories all have something to offer. We will look at them in depth, as we take a day long look at what parts of our work eat away at us.
We will do three interactive activities during the training that will help put our learning into practice and you will find simple ways to release the stress of your work. The techniques discussed can also be used in supervision and with clients.
Objectives:
- Learn the signs of Vicarious Traumatization
- Understand how different theoretical view point view Vicarious Traumatization
- Explore how their clinical experiences impact them
- Learn how to use narrative based questions
- Problem-solve about challenging clinical examples.
