Many prominent therapists and psychologists\, including trauma expert Bessel van der Kolk\, use a form of tapping with their clients\, and now you can too. \nEFT Tapping is a technique based on the same science as acupuncture. Since its inception in the late 1980s\, more than 200 research studies supporting its effectiveness have been published. Studies show that Tapping can reduce activity in the amygdala\, up-regulate immune genes\, down-regulate inflammation genes\, increase endorphin release\, and decrease cortisol levels in a very short period of time. Tapping has been shown to increase test scores\, manage phobias\, and reduce pain. Tapping helps with trauma symptoms by safely releasing emotional numbing\, calming fears of vulnerability and connection\, reducing the need to be perfect\, and quieting shame. This workshop provides you with the introductory skills you need to start using basic tapping techniques and to teach your clients immediately.  \nIn addition to learning how to help clients with this evidence-based intervention\, attendees will also learn how to include Tapping as a technique in their own self-care toolkit. Listening to our clients’ fears\, stress\, anxiety\, and pain can affect our ability to stay calm\, centered\, and peaceful in our own lives. Our self-care is crucial to our ability to offer quality care to our clients. Tapping can help you stay focused and present for your clients and release any intense energy you may be holding after a therapeutic session. \nContinuing Education Workshop Objectives\nAfter attending this workshop\, attendees will: \n1. Comprehend that self-care adds to their clinical competency and adheres to the ethical mandate to include self-care in their daily lives to avoid impairment in functioning (NASW\, 2021; ACA\, 2014; APA\, 2019). \n2. Learn how to introduce Tapping into the therapeutic setting\, communicating with clients about the purpose and use of EFT/Tapping in ways that are both developmentally and culturally appropriate\, aligning with the ethical imperative of informed consent. Do you feel comfortable talking with your clients about intimacy? How do we talk about what we desire and what we want to say “No” to? In this 6-CE continuing education workshop\, we will explore all of this and more — using the most current research and writings on Sex Therapy as the foundation for the workshop. \nOver the past twenty-five years\, Rebecca’s clinical work has centered on helping adult survivors of complex trauma reclaim safety\, agency\, and connection after profound experiences of betrayal and harm. Much of this work has involved sitting with the realities of developmental trauma\, attachment wounds\, and the long-lasting effects of abuse perpetrated by trusted individuals. \nAs the presenter begins integrating intimacy and couples counseling more intentionally into my practice\, she has become increasingly aware of how essential conversations about pleasure\, embodiment\, and desire are within trauma treatment. Our clients often learn how to endure\, protect\, and disconnect long before they are given permission to explore what feels good\, nourishing\, or truly wanted—to discover what brings them pleasure. \nRebecca’s theoretical foundation has been strongly informed by post-graduate training and completion of Levels One and Two at the Sensory Psychotherapy Institute. Using this sensory-informed approach during the workshop\, we will explore safe ways for your clients to discuss what their bodies and minds want most—what is pleasurable to them. \nWe will take time to really look at human physiology and how each of our parts work. This approach emphasizes mindfulness\, nervous system awareness\, and the importance of tracking bodily experience as part of healing. \nWhen clients begin to slow down through mindfulness and sense perception\, they often discover that they have limited experience identifying what they genuinely want. By helping clients attend to sensory experiences in the present moment\, therapists can support the development of curiosity\, self-trust\, and emotional regulation. This process creates space for clients to recognize preferences\, boundaries\, pleasure\, and longing in ways that may have previously felt inaccessible or unsafe. \nWe will also explore issues that complicate desire. The most common topics among these that come up in the treatment room include nonmonogamy\, kink\, how our bodies work\, pornography\, family systems and beliefs\, and societal messaging. \nRather than approaching intimacy solely through cognition or narrative processing\, helping clients remain grounded and present in their bodies creates opportunities for deeper self-understanding and relational connection.
