This continuing education workshop is designed to equip clinicians with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively integrate religion and spirituality into their therapeutic practice. \nIn this workshop\, we will explore the vital role that spirituality and religion can play in clinical work\, in that it can offer clients a deeper sense of meaning\, purpose\, and connection. We will examine the theoretical frameworks and evidence-based practices that support the integration of spirituality and religion in therapy. \nYou will learn how spiritual beliefs influence clients’ worldviews\, coping mechanisms\, and emotional well-being. You will also become familiar with techniques for assessing clients’ spiritual and religious beliefs\, learning how to incorporate these elements into the therapeutic process. The training will also cover how to create a safe and inclusive environment for discussing spiritual and religious issues. \nWe will also explore the ethical guidelines and cultural competencies necessary for integrating spirituality and religion into counseling. As clinicians\, the goal is to recognize the importance of respecting clients’ beliefs and knowing how to maintain professional boundaries. \nThis training will introduce a wide range of practical therapeutic approaches and interventions that draw upon spiritual and religious resources\, such as mindfulness\, meditation\, prayer\, and ritual. You will learn how to adapt these techniques to suit individual client needs and preferences. \nBy the end of this workshop\, you will have a comprehensive understanding of how to incorporate spirituality and religion into your counseling practice\, which will deepen your ability to support clients on their journey of healing and well-being. This continuing education workshop will explore the universal experience of grief – the process that attempts to recover meaning following a loss (Brown\, 2021) – and the myriad ways in which it can go awry. \nThe wounds of childhood compound as we age and inevitably experience further losses\, each echoing the initial pain. In a realistic and lighthearted way\, we will address the reality of impermanence and our lifelong effort to adjust. From treating acute grief in childhood to the manifestation of unresolved loss in our adult clients\, this class will explore the ways therapists can help integrate the hurts of a lifetime. \nThis class is designed for practicing therapists with clients of all ages. The workshop will be conducted in a Zoom format\, and teaching modalities will include a mix of clinical discussion\, lecture with clinical examples & video illustrations\, as well as individual/group case exercises. \nWORKSHOP OBJECTIVES:\n\nHonoring the complexity of human relationships and experiences\, recognize that death is only one manifestation of the loss people endure.\nUnderstand the neuropsychological basis for traumatic loss experiences in childhood persisting throughout the lifespan into adulthood and affecting our clients long after the event occurred.\nIdentify prolonged grief disorder (a.k.a. complicated grief or traumatic grief) as well as symbolic loss\, disenfranchised grief\, and ambiguous loss.\nRecognize how children’s\, tweens’ & teens’ understanding of death and reaction to loss differs from the presentation of adults; as well as interpret behavioral patterns at different developmental stages.\nImplement therapeutic interventions for adults\, including Worden’s TEAR model and Shear’s HEALING milestones.\nEstablish a treatment plan for clients experiencing grief & loss and explore developmentally appropriate therapeutic tools and activities.\nAccess provided references and resources for further study.\n\nREGISTER HERE\n  \n  \n

How do we provide ethical\, empathic\, client-centered care while also acknowledging systemic inequities\, the developmental consequences of early trauma\, and our broader social responsibility? \nThis six-hour continuing education workshop invites participants to wrestle with these questions. Co-taught by Angela Tucker and Deborah Gray\, the workshop explores the complex intersections of foster care placement\, adoptee identity\, transracial adoption\, race\, attachment\, grief\, trauma\, and belonging. \nParticipants will examine how adoption shapes identity across the lifespan through the Adoptee Consciousness Model\, while also exploring racial identity development\, code-switching\, the historical and contemporary influence of White Christian Nationalism on child welfare\, and the ethical challenges facing today’s therapists and social workers. \nTogether\, participants will consider the developmental impacts of neglect\, attachment disruption\, and early trauma alongside current child welfare policies\, asking difficult questions about justice\, equity\, and best practice. \nThe workshop challenges professionals to recognize overt and implicit discrimination\, thoughtfully navigate differences in political and religious worldviews\, and strengthen their abilities to provide culturally responsive care to adoptees and families who have been involved in child welfare. \nUsing a combination of presentation\, facilitated discussion\, video analysis\, self-reflection\, and role-play\, participants will leave with practical tools for working with clients involved in child welfare\, adoptees\, and their families in this sociopolitical climate. \nTherapists and social workers will recognize and counter their countertransference issues without derailing the helping relationship.
