You will receive your Zoom link/invitation the week of the workshop.\nContinuing Education Credit Hours (NBCC and NASW-WA Approved): 6 CEs | $190.00 \nContinuing Education Workshop Description:\nModern neuroscience has provided us with valuable and targeted information to help in understanding and healing the traumatized brain\, including those with severe developmental trauma who later end up with “personality disorder” diagnoses. \nUnfortunately\, much of this valuable information remains abstract and out of reach to those doing the actual work of trauma treatment. \nThis workshop will address these issues by combining insights from neuroscience with an evidence-based treatment approach known as Internal Family Systems. \nInternal Family Systems is a treatment modality created in the 1980s by Dr. Richard C. Schwartz. Trained as a couples and family therapist\, Dr. Schwartz realized the same dynamics he found in family systems also presented within individuals. His work reveals the brain’s natural ability to create different parts\, known as Managers\, Firefighters\, and Exiles\, to protect the core\, undamaged self. His theory is non-pathologizing\, allowing us to see “diagnoses” as “strategies” and recognizing the protective nature of the “Internal Family.” Using modern brain science and these well-established concepts\, we can isolate and treat the “Inner Child” – those parts that carry traumatic memory – more effectively. \nIn this dynamic\, experiential session\, you will learn the underlying framework of Internal Family Systems from both traditional and neuroscience-informed perspectives\, allowing for greater understanding of yourself and your client and providing higher precision in therapeutic work. By applying narrative and imagery-based techniques in real time\, you will incorporate what is known about brain processing into your work\, enabling you to reach “the Inner Child” more efficiently and safely. Attendees will grow in their practical understanding and application of neuroscience to help reduce shame\, increase client engagement\, improve outcomes\, and – as an added bonus – reduce clinician burnout! \nCONTINUING EDUCATION WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES: \n• Consider Internal Family Systems (IFS) structure and techniques from both traditional and neuroscience-informed perspectives\n• Apply a non-pathologizing treatment model to reduce shame and increase client ability to grow and change.\n• Use “Externalization of Parts” and other somatic\, imagery- and analogy-based techniques to develop the concept of the “Inner Child” to promote experiences that create new neural connections that lead to lasting change and healing\n• Learn techniques to teach internal communication and self-compassion and define and measure success in more effective ways\n• Communicate modern neuroscience principles of neuroplasticity\, mentalization\, and somatic responding as they relate to IFS and the “Inner Child” in a user-friendly manner\n• Apply newly learned skills in real-time to build competency and confidence as a practitioner \nREGISTER HERE\n  \n  \n

How do we provide ethical\, empathic\, client-centered care while also acknowledging systemic inequities\, the developmental consequences of early trauma\, and our broader social responsibility? \nThis six-hour continuing education workshop invites participants to wrestle with these questions. Co-taught by Angela Tucker and Deborah Gray\, the workshop explores the complex intersections of foster care placement\, adoptee identity\, transracial adoption\, race\, attachment\, grief\, trauma\, and belonging. \nParticipants will examine how adoption shapes identity across the lifespan through the Adoptee Consciousness Model\, while also exploring racial identity development\, code-switching\, the historical and contemporary influence of White Christian Nationalism on child welfare\, and the ethical challenges facing today’s therapists and social workers. \nTogether\, participants will consider the developmental impacts of neglect\, attachment disruption\, and early trauma alongside current child welfare policies\, asking difficult questions about justice\, equity\, and best practice. \nThe workshop challenges professionals to recognize overt and implicit discrimination\, thoughtfully navigate differences in political and religious worldviews\, and strengthen their abilities to provide culturally responsive care to adoptees and families who have been involved in child welfare. \nUsing a combination of presentation\, facilitated discussion\, video analysis\, self-reflection\, and role-play\, participants will leave with practical tools for working with clients involved in child welfare\, adoptees\, and their families in this sociopolitical climate. \nTherapists and social workers will recognize and counter their countertransference issues without derailing the helping relationship. Workshop attendees will develop skills for greater cultural humility\, ethical awareness\, and clinical confidence. \nContinuing Education Workshop Objectives\nBy the end of this workshop\, participants will be able to: \n\nAnalyze the unique identity challenges experienced by transracial foster children and adoptees\, including racial identity development\, code-switching\, belonging\, and navigating multiple cultural worlds.\nSummarize the historical and contemporary influence of race\, White Christian Nationalism\, and systemic power on child welfare and adoption practices in the United States.\nIdentify the effects of “color-blind” parenting on attachment when children of color are raised in white families. Describe strategies that promote secure parent-child attachment through caregiver education and increased racial awareness.\nDemonstrate adoptee-centered communication strategies that promote identity exploration\, validate lived experience\, and support healthy racial and adoptee identity development.\nIdentify four developmental impacts of early neglect and trauma exposure and explain how these experiences influence children’s emotional\, relational\, and neurological development.\nApply appropriate boundaries around self-disclosure when working with families whose political or religious beliefs differ from their own\, while avoiding false consensus in helping relationships.\nRecognize signs of countertransference\, identify situations in which it may interfere with effective practice\, and describe strategies for maintaining regulation and therapeutic effectiveness.\n\nREGISTER HERE\n  \n
