It presents an opportunity for licensed therapists to learn about trauma-informed\, culturally-attuned therapeutic care to immigrant clients from all over the world. A quick web search about training programs about the mental health needs of immigrants reveals that there is limited knowledge and discussion in the mental health and psychology fields about the immigration process and the unique needs of immigrant communities based on their immigration pathways. \nImmigration status is a major factor that intersects with a range of other identity variables (Tahirih Justice Center\, 2023) and provides nuance to the inner world of immigrant clients\, especially those who may be new to therapy. \nMigration to the U.S. has grown steadily over the last few decades. Migration happens for reasons as varied as education and labor opportunities\, family reunification\, and escape from war\, persecution\, and other traumatic experiences. Whether by choice (“pull factors” that attract immigrants to the U.S.) or by necessity (“push factors” that necessitate migration out of their home countries)\, immigrants face a host of psychological and socioeconomic challenges and stressors during and after migrating. These profoundly affect their mental health and quality of life (Shea & Wong\, 2022). \nLicensed Clinical-Community Psychologist Dr. Gitika Talwar created and will present this workshop\, drawing on her personal experience as a first-generation immigrant and immigration activist and her professional experience working with international students\, first-generation immigrants\, refugees\, and asylum seekers in the United States. Dr. Talwar’s dissertation focused on the immigration experiences of people who migrated from Afghanistan to the U.S. between 1965 and 2012. \nObjectives: \n\nAttendees will reflect on their understanding and personal experience with immigration\nAttendees will gain knowledge about multiple pathways of immigration and access to resources\nAttendees will learn about neurobiological and psychosocial impact of migration\nAttendees will recognize ways to expand their therapeutic prompts and practices to include the needs of the immigrant community\n\nREGISTER HERE\n  \n

You will receive your Zoom link/invitation the week of the workshop.\nContinuing Education Credit Hours: 6 CEs – counts toward Health Equity requirements and Cultural Competence requirements| $199.00\nTherapists are becoming increasingly aware of the harm that has been/is being done to clients when healthcare settings (including counseling practices) focus on weight and weight loss as a primary goal.  Most therapists\, however\, have not been trained in how to have conversations with their clients about body shame\, weight stigma\, healthism\, diet culture\, and sizeism. How\, then\, do therapists help clients heal body shame in a weight-obsessed world when our culture is obsessed with weight being an indicator of health?   This course introduces therapists to practical resources\, knowledge\, empowering interventions\, and the language needed to help challenge weight stigma\, connect weight stigma and negative health outcomes\, and support clients toward weight-neutral and compassionate self-care. \nMany providers have increased their awareness of the need to adjust their practice lens and use a more weight-inclusive\, fat-positive approach to addressing food and body issues. Mental health clinicians have become increasingly aware of the expanding body of research that says intentional weight loss and dieting just don’t work\, and find themselves no longer ethically comfortable participating in diet culture. Therapists understand that supporting clients in weight loss or lifestyle changes (even for health reasons) is frequently emotionally and metabolically damaging\, is not trauma-informed\, often results in eating disorders and poor health outcomes\, and is rooted in weight bias and the body hierarchy.  Ethical\, culturally competent mental health practitioners want to know how to help their clients have a more peaceful relationship with food and their bodies.  However\, even the best-intentioned clinician finds that the cultural climate of weight stigma is so prevalent in both medical and mental health fields that they don’t even know where to begin. \nThis course will help therapists have conversations about bodies\, weight\, and health without contributing to the body shaming and size bias that is commonplace in healthcare settings. Recognizing values alignment and values misalignment can be an opportunity for a deep and sincere therapeutic encounter. Cultural humility can be a practice to navigate this therapeutic encounter in helpful ways. \nCultural humility can help the therapist be an effective steward of the therapeutic space because it focuses on continuous self-reflection\, discovery\, and fostering honest\, trustworthy relationships with clients (Yeager & Bauer-Wu\, 2013). It represents a shift from cultural competence\, which emphasizes “knowing” about various cultural groups\, to an ongoing process of “understanding” and “being” with the client (Tervalon & Murray-García\, 1998; Lekas et al.\, 2020). \nKey aspects and principles of cultural humility include: \n\nLifelong self-exploration and learning: continuous commitment to self-reflection and a willingness to learn from clients’ experiences (Summers & Nelson\, 2022).\nAcknowledging power dynamics and biases: Therapists are invited to recognize their own biases and the inherent power imbalances within the therapeutic relationship (Summers & Nelson\, 2022).\nRespect for diverse identities and cultural capital: It entails showing respect for clients’ various identities (e.g.\, race\, ethnicity\, sexual orientation\, religion\, age\, gender\, ability) and acknowledging their strengths and resources (Summers & Nelson\, 2022).\nTrust and belief in client reports: Culturally humble practitioners trust clients’ accounts of harassment\, discrimination\, and oppression\, rather than seeking alternative explanations for presenting problems (Summers & Nelson\, 2022).\nNot being the expert: Therapists understand that they are not the experts when clients have lived experiences different from their own (Summers & Nelson\, 2022).\nOpenness\, curiosity\, and flexibility: This approach encourages therapists to be open\, curious\, flexible\, and empathetic to better understand clients’ needs (Summers & Nelson\, 2022).\nAdvocacy: It includes advocating to dismantle systemic barriers that impact clients (Summers & Nelson\, 2022).\n\nMosher et al. (2017) report that the impact of cultural humility in therapy includes: \n\nDeeper therapeutic alliances\nOpportunities to communicate respect for the client’s cultural identity\nBetter therapy outcomes\nOpportunities for meaningful engagement and repair of cultural mistakes\n\nResearch indicates that common humanity\, a component of self-compassion\, can increase cultural humility in counseling students (Rikard\, 2022). Cultural humility is considered a desirable trait in therapists and is significantly related to a strong working alliance and client improvement (Hook et al.\, 2013).
