SUMMARY:Mindfulness In Nature
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is an opportunity to tend to your own health and well-being AND earn CE credits!\nMindfulness In Nature\nPresented by: Dr. Brenda Butterfield\, EdD\, MSW\, LMHC \nWhen: Friday\, July 10th\, 2026 | 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM\, Pacific Time\nWhere: Live in person at the ONE Center (7400 Gallagher Cove Road NW\, Olympia\, WA 98502)\nLodging Information: If you’d like to come the night before or stay over on Friday night after the workshop\, you can explore the lodging options provided by the ONE Center here. For questions about lodging\, please email the ONE Center at ournewexperiences@gmail.com\nContinuing Education Credit Hours: 6 CEs | $199.00\nCome to ONE to explore and experience mindfulness in nature. This workshop is the confluence of mindfulness\, cognitive-based therapy\, and eco therapy\, creating an innovative paradigm for providing holistic\, client-centered care to support both client and clinician well-being.  Come\, learn about the Mindfulness Movement that continues to change lives worldwide by helping people wake up and discover new ways to live a more peaceful\, joy-filled\, and healthier life. This movement includes different clinical Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBI’s) effective for helping people suffer less from insomnia\, chronic pain\, depression\, anxiety\, substance abuse\, suicidality\, and other painful conditions. \nWhile psychological interventions are typically knowledge-based and directed toward client change\, irrespective of the clinician’s health and well-being\, Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBI’s) are different.  They require clinicians practice what they preach and teach from their practice. So\, let’s practice mindfulness together at the beautiful ONE Center on the South Salish Sea just outside Olympia\, WA.  ONE is a beautiful and special place created specifically for health care providers. And this day of learning is designed to support your health and well-being WHILE earning continuing education credits too! This workshop is retreat-style\, nature-based\, and experiential. We’ll be walking slowly for short distances\, pausing along the way in the forest and by the sea. This will allow participants to experience mindfulness by slowing down\, pausing\, and resting in moments of presence and awareness.  This supports deep learning through connection with oneself\, colleagues\, and the natural world. \nYou’ll learn about the research-based benefits of integrating MBI’s in clinical practice and what makes them unique from other interventions. You’ll develop an understanding of the autonomic\, sympathetic\, and parasympathetic nervous system so you can explain to clients the mind/body relationship to chronic stress (CBT thinking errors)\, mental health conditions (depression/anxiety/panic attacks)\, somatic symptoms\, and behavior patterns. Together\, we’ll practice simple breathing techniques to activate the parasympathetic nervous system to facilitate somatic\, cognitive\, and emotional regulation. You’ll learn research-supported simple practices you can teach clients to support their health and well-being\, while simultaneously supporting yours.  In addition\, we’ll explore questions including: What is mindfulness? What does it mean to BE mindful and to practice mindfulness?  What’s the difference between mindfulness and meditation? What does research suggest about integrating mindfulness in mental health care? \nWe hope you come\, explore\, and experience mindfulness in nature through invitations from the beautiful land\, gardens\, forest\, and waters of the South Salish Sea at The ONE Center. \nWorkshop Objectives:\nIn this workshop\, you will \n\nUnderstand the benefits of integrating MBI’s in clinical practice and the necessity to teach from one’s lived experience.\nLearn what mindfulness is and how to develop a daily practice for yourself and your clients.\nExplore the language\, concepts\, and phenomena of mindfulness.\nLearn about the mind/body relationship between chronic stress (CBT Thinking Errors) and health (depression/anxiety/panic attacks)\, enabling you to explain the Autonomic\, Sympathetic\, and Parasympathetic Nervous System to clients.\nPractice various breathing techniques to activate the parasympathetic nervous system and facilitate emotional regulation.\nLearn formal and informal mindfulness practices for therapeutic use with clients (guided meditation\, mindful walking\, walking meditation\, body scan\, mindful eating\, STOP method\, etc.)\nBecome familiar with how to explain the relationship between CBT thinking errors and mindfulness to provide more holistic care to clients.\n\nREGISTER HERE\n  \n

Participants will become aware of the legal and ethical considerations necessary to provide this option for client sessions. Participants will learn the key concepts and significant benefits of providing therapy sessions outdoors\, in a natural setting\, complemented by using expressive arts modalities. The presenter will also teach how these approaches connect through a polyvagal lens. \nParticipants will learn what it takes to provide ethical\, impactful\, confident\, and competent therapy for clients in an outdoor natural setting. The presenter will teach participants how to include expressive arts modalities and somatic awareness techniques in nature therapy\, as these techniques will be interwoven throughout this daylong experience. Experientials will be facilitated to aid participants in their own embodied experience of a session in nature. Participants will leave this course ethically and legally prepared to facilitate an outdoor\, nature-based therapy session\, understanding the client appropriateness (what clients are a good fit for this type of therapy)\, location considerations (parks\, trails\, beaches\, weather conditions\, parking\, etcetera)\, and critical skills needed for facilitating a helpful walk-and-talk session outdoors (multidimensional awareness\, various approaches to facilitation\, and safety considerations). Participants will leave this experiential workshop feeling confident and inspired to offer a more integrated clinical approach than they thought possible! \nOBJECTIVES:\n\n Consider legal\, ethical\, and documentation implications for doing nature-based therapy outdoors.\n Identify important considerations for specific populations.\n Understand the legal and ethical considerations of practicing nature-based therapy in a walk-and-talk session.\n Describe differences among ecotherapy\, nature-based\, adventure-based\, and wilderness therapies.\n Identify key concepts of ecotherapy and nature-based therapy\n Assess who to work with and when\, where to go and why\, and what to expect and consider in various regions and environments when using nature-based therapy.\n Understand the therapist’s identity in nature-based versus ecotherapy practices.\n Introduce common types of nature-based approaches into walk-and-talk therapy sessions.\n\nREGISTER HERE
