SUMMARY:From Immigration to Homecoming: Supporting the Mental Health Needs of Immigrant Clients
DESCRIPTION:Law & Ethics\, Health Equity\, and/or \nCultural Competence CEs\nFrom Immigration to Homecoming: Supporting the Mental Health Needs of Immigrant Clients\nPart One of a Two-Part Series\n(though you don’t need to be registered for both to attend either)\nPart Two\, Cultural Humility in Working with Immigrant Clients\, is on Friday\, June 12th. Learn more and register here >>>\nPresented by: Dr. Gitika Talwar\nWhen: Friday\, May 1st\, 2026 | 9:00 AM – 12:15 PM\, Pacific Time\nWhere: Live on Zoom. You will receive your Zoom link/invitation the week of the workshop.\nContinuing Education Credit Hours: 3 Law & Ethics\, Health Equity\, and/or Cultural Competence CEs | $99.00\nWorkshop Description \nThis workshop focuses on the impact of immigration on the mental health of immigrants. It presents an opportunity for licensed therapists to learn about trauma-informed\, culturally-attuned therapeutic care to immigrant clients from all over the world. A quick web search about training programs about the mental health needs of immigrants reveals that there is limited knowledge and discussion in the mental health and psychology fields about the immigration process and the unique needs of immigrant communities based on their immigration pathways. \nImmigration status is a major factor that intersects with a range of other identity variables (Tahirih Justice Center\, 2023) and provides nuance to the inner world of immigrant clients\, especially those who may be new to therapy. \nMigration to the U.S. has grown steadily over the last few decades. Migration happens for reasons as varied as education and labor opportunities\, family reunification\, and escape from war\, persecution\, and other traumatic experiences. Whether by choice (“pull factors” that attract immigrants to the U.S.) or by necessity (“push factors” that necessitate migration out of their home countries)\, immigrants face a host of psychological and socioeconomic challenges and stressors during and after migrating. These profoundly affect their mental health and quality of life (Shea & Wong\, 2022). \nLicensed Clinical-Community Psychologist Dr. Gitika Talwar created and will present this workshop\, drawing on her personal experience as a first-generation immigrant and immigration activist and her professional experience working with international students\, first-generation immigrants\, refugees\, and asylum seekers in the United States. Dr. Talwar’s dissertation focused on the immigration experiences of people who migrated from Afghanistan to the U.S. between 1965 and 2012. \nObjectives: \n\nAttendees will reflect on their understanding and personal experience with immigration\nAttendees will gain knowledge about multiple pathways of immigration and access to resources\nAttendees will learn about neurobiological and psychosocial impact of migration\nAttendees will recognize ways to expand their therapeutic prompts and practices to include the needs of the immigrant community\n\nREGISTER HERE\n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Brand-New!\nReconceptualizing OCD\nPresented by: B Lourenco\, MA\, LMHC (she/her)\nWhen: Friday\, May 1st\, 2026 | 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM Pacific Time\nWhere: Live on Zoom. You will receive your Zoom link/invitation the week of the workshop.\nContinuing Education Credit Hours (NBCC and NASW-WA Approved): 6 CEs | Cost: $190.00\nWith the rise of the Neurodiversity-Affirming movement\, the field of psychology has had to grapple with the ever-growing knowledge that it got it wrong with Autism and ADHD. This course asks: What if we’ve gotten OCD wrong\, too? What if OCD is part of the innate neurodivergent umbrella that needs support and accommodation instead of treatments that often end up feeling like a game of whack-a-mole? \nB Lourenco uses a combination of lived experience and scientific research to analyze and assess the current understanding of and framework for OCD and its treatment. This continuing education workshop offers a different way of viewing OCD through a non-pathologizing lens\, a holistic view that honors the strengths of the OC brain. This workshop will also cover ways to provide care for clients using a blend of modalities that offer affirming support. If you live or work with OCD\, this class will absolutely leave you questioning what you thought you knew! \nWorkshop Objectives:\n\nCompare and contrast the medical model and the reconceptualization of OCD\nDescribe the purpose of the OC brain through a non-pathologizing lens\nIdentify ways that the OC brain may have supported early human survival\nDescribe the impact of trauma and/or core fears on the experience of OCD\nDefine what shifts an OC brain into an experience of OCD\nLearn how to support OCD through a combination of I-CBT\, ACT\, and IFS\n\nREGISTER HERE\n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:BRAND-NEW!\nHealth Equity or Cultural Competence CEs!\nEnduring Relationships: Connection-Driven Tools to Mitigate Separations & Transitions in Foster Care\nPresented by: Kristie Baber\, MSW\, LICSW\, CCTP\nWhen: Thursday\, May 7th\, 2026 | 9:00 am – 12:00 pm Pacific Time\nWhere: Live on Zoom. You will receive your Zoom link/invitation the week of the workshop.\nContinuing Education Credit Hours: 3 Health Equity or Cultural Competence CEs | $90.00\nDespite Julia Robert’s assertion to Richard Gere in Pretty Woman\, home is NOT just geography. Most importantly\, it’s about relationships – the ones we build\, the ones we lose\, and the ones we nurture despite the challenges of distance or system involvement. \nDealing with the inherent issues of separation and transition in the foster care system\, this workshop will address ways to protect connections\, prioritize relationships\, and buffer the experience of loss. With a focus on our kids’ experience of the world\, we’ll explore the following: \n\nVisits\, separations\, and transitions with relationships as the focus\nUnique exposure to grief & loss\nHealthy transitions with tools & resources\nImpacts of placement moves at different stages\nEffective communication with children\nReconsideration of permanence\, family relationships & “open” adoption\n\nThe audience for this workshop includes mental health therapists\, social workers\, caregivers\, and any pediatric providers caring for system-involved children. There will be videos and case vignettes to illustrate\, as well as tons of tools and resources provided (because your jobs are hard enough!). \nREGISTER HERE\n  \n

SUMMARY:Love What Hurts
DESCRIPTION:Back by Popular Demand!\nLove What Hurts\nPresented by: Lisha Song\, LMHC\nWhen: Friday\, May 8th\, 2026 | 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM\, Pacific Time\nWhere: Live on Zoom. You will receive your Zoom link/invitation the week of the workshop.\nContinuing Education Credit Hours: 6 CEs |$190.00\nIn this workshop\, attendees will learn how to notice where emotions are felt in the body from an observer’s point of view\, recognize negative beliefs that are attached to these emotions (i.e.\, “I’m not good enough”)\, and identify the past events/experiences that are related to these emotions. Attendees will also learn how to neutralize these emotions and negative cognitions through an ego-state practice called the “Clearing Exercise.” \nClinicians who attend will learn techniques to enhance positive feelings\, sensations\, or beliefs through bilateral stimulation (tapping). \nBy the end of this one-day training\, you will be able to teach your clients these skills\, so they can experience self-compassion and clarity of thought\, and learn to follow their own inner guidance to make better decisions.  \nWORKSHOP OBJECTIVES: \n\nUnderstanding how the body stores past emotional wounding and traumatic experiences\, noticing where those emotions are felt specifically in the body by becoming an “observer” of the experience\, and learning how to neutralize those feelings and sensations.\n Exercising the power of imagination or a “felt sense” and befriending those wounded parts of Self\, and learn how to nurture those parts.\nUnderstanding our ever-sophisticated nervous system through the lens of the Polyvagal Theory and utilizing its tools to further our management of it.\nRecognizing how negative beliefs about the self manifest over time and become part of our identity.\nLearning to awaken the unconscious through the “sixth sense” of intuition and spiritual connection\, and adopt more trust in your own inner knowing. When nervous systems are hijacked by emotional triggers\, we tend not to trust our intuition.\nFeeling more empowered and compassionate when triggers from past experiences hijack the nervous system by practicing Lisha’s Clearing Exercise and teaching it to clients.\n\nREGISTER HERE\n  \n

SUMMARY:Body Justice: Addressing Sizeism and Fear of Fat
DESCRIPTION:Health Equity or Cultural Competence CEs!\nBody Justice: Addressing Sizeism and Fear of Fat\nPresented by: Amber Rice\, LMFT\, MA\nWhen: Wednesday\, May 13\, 2026 | 9:00 am – 4:30 pm Pacific Time\nWhere: Live on Zoom. You will receive your Zoom link/invitation the week of the workshop.\nContinuing Education Credit Hours: 6 CEs – counts toward Health Equity requirements and Cultural Competence requirements| $199.00\nTherapists are becoming increasingly aware of the harm that has been/is being done to clients when healthcare settings (including counseling practices) focus on weight and weight loss as a primary goal.  Most therapists\, however\, have not been trained in how to have conversations with their clients about body shame\, weight stigma\, healthism\, diet culture\, and sizeism. How\, then\, do therapists help clients heal body shame in a weight-obsessed world when our culture is obsessed with weight being an indicator of health?   This course introduces therapists to practical resources\, knowledge\, empowering interventions\, and the language needed to help challenge weight stigma\, connect weight stigma and negative health outcomes\, and support clients toward weight-neutral and compassionate self-care. \nMany providers have increased their awareness of the need to adjust their practice lens and use a more weight-inclusive\, fat-positive approach to addressing food and body issues. Mental health clinicians have become increasingly aware of the expanding body of research that says intentional weight loss and dieting just don’t work\, and find themselves no longer ethically comfortable participating in diet culture. Therapists understand that supporting clients in weight loss or lifestyle changes (even for health reasons) is frequently emotionally and metabolically damaging\, is not trauma-informed\, often results in eating disorders and poor health outcomes\, and is rooted in weight bias and the body hierarchy.  Ethical\, culturally competent mental health practitioners want to know how to help their clients have a more peaceful relationship with food and their bodies.  However\, even the best-intentioned clinician finds that the cultural climate of weight stigma is so prevalent in both medical and mental health fields that they don’t even know where to begin. \nThis course will help therapists have conversations about bodies\, weight\, and health without contributing to the body shaming and size bias that is commonplace in healthcare settings. Amber will introduce participants to knowledge that will help them ethically and compassionately address the impacts of weight stigma with their clients.  Workshop attendees will learn ways to help their clients reduce body shame\, improve their relationship with food\, and invite more satisfaction and joy in their lives in a culturally competent way so they can be more resilient and confident in their own skin. \nObjectives:\n\nDiscuss the use of “fat” as a reclaimed term\, ask for the avoidance of the “O” words (obese\, overweight)\, the use of “numbers” to describe weight\, and other guidelines to avoid microaggressions that may take place during the workshop.\nPresent research studies and lived experiences that provide evidence for the need to practice with a weight-inclusive approach.\nTeach the core values and principles of Health at Every Size and Body Trust approaches.\nProvide an overview of the HAES and Body Trust approaches\, along with practical clinical interventions for clients seeking a more peaceful relationship with food and their bodies.\nDiscuss with participants the ethical considerations and dilemmas present in the current medical and mental health models that support weight loss for health purposes.\nOffer a pathway toward becoming more culturally competent\, with an adjusted lens that actively seeks to eliminate implicit and explicit bias in assessment\, treatment\, and orientation.\nList action steps that participants can employ to create a more weight-neutral practice.\nAsk attendees to acknowledge possible body (thin) privilege.\nEvaluate therapeutic spaces and environments to ensure they are fat-friendly and free of pathologizing magazines and stigmatizing language/media/magazines.\nAdvocate for self-examination for fatphobia and anti-fat bias.\nIncrease the visibility of fat people and scour websites and waiting rooms for diet culture.\n\nREGISTER HERE\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Attachment and the Neurobiology of Relationships
DESCRIPTION:Attachment and the Neurobiology of Relationships\nPresented by: Kristie Baber\, MSW\, LICSW\, CCTP\nWhen: Thursday\, May 14th\, 2026 | 9:00 am – 4:30 pm Pacific Time\nWhere: Live on Zoom. You will receive your Zoom link/invitation the week of the event.\nContinuing Education Credits: 6 CEs | $190.00 \nThis workshop focuses on one of the most critical components in mental health\, social development\, and therapeutic intervention across our lifespan – attachment. \nThis class will demonstrate that attachment is a journey\, rather than the predetermined lifelong limitation a jaded clinical view might indicate. It typifies the astounding adaptability and hope inherent in humans – the reasons we believe in our work as therapists. \nThis workshop will give therapists and other helping professionals working with all age populations an understanding of attachment theory\, patterns and clinical presentations\, as well as practical tools to create sustainable and effective therapeutic change. We will explore how attachment develops and evolves across a lifespan\, influencing all of our relationships. Teaching modalities will include a mix of clinical discussion\, lecture with clinical examples\, video illustrations\, and individual/group case exercises. \nObjectives:\n\nIdentify key factors that impact and influence our baseline neurobiology such as brain development\, memory systems\, and trauma.\nUnderstand attachment theory\, as well as attachment patterns and clinical presentations.\nLearn the various ways attachment styles impact our lives and all types of relationships.\nRecognize attachment as one of core components in the therapeutic relationship.\nDiscuss attachment-based therapies for children\, adolescents\, adults\, and couples.\n\nREGISTER HERE\n  \n

SUMMARY:Tarot and Therapy: Intuition and Metaphor
DESCRIPTION:Law & Ethics CEs!\nTarot and Therapy: Intuition and Metaphor\nPresented by: Rebecca Bloom\, LMHC (she/her)\nWhen: Friday\, May 15th\, 2026 | 9:00 am – 4:30 pm Pacific Time\nWhere: Live in-person at the Shoreline Center\nContinuing Education Credit Hours: 6 CEs – 3 Law & Ethics CEs | $199.00\, which includes $174.00 tuition plus $25.00 for Ephemera Art Supply Packs Created by Rebecca Bloom especially for Cascadia Training Registrants. \nWhy is Tarot so popular right now? Are your clients coming in talking about the card they pulled before the session and you have no idea what that means? Have you used tarot for years for your own well being and would love to use it with mental health clients but not sure how? \nMost clients come into therapy saying that they do not have access to their intuition and are not sure how to trust what the right choices are to make in their lives. Using a single card pulled from a tarot deck\, and exploring the client’s meaning of the card\, clients can begin to feel connected to their own sense of self\, clients can find new ways to safely explore difficult experiences and find ways to test out feeling grounded again. \nStarting with the Jungian concepts of Archetypes we will look at how the collective sense of self represents over these twelve types of being.  Then we will explore the history and uses of tarot. These seventy-eight cards have been used for hundreds of years. Using the Rider-Waite-Smith deck\, from 1909\, as a starting place we will look at many of the decks available today and why people turn to them every day or when times get difficult. \nWe will explore intuition and how to trust our own sense of knowing. In this hands-on workshop\, you will make five of your own cards.  Exploring the major arcana\, and the suits of cups\, pentacles\, swords and wands we will learn the journeys of each of these sets. \nObjectives:\n\nLearn archetypes of Jung and Tarot.\nLearn why the creative process soothes the body and the mind.\nFind materials you will be comfortable using with your clients.\nUse art making for your own self-care.\n\nREGISTER HERE

The world is changing quickly\, and with it\, more and more people realize that their brain works differently than others. Due to the influence of social media and the shift to focusing on lived experience as a legitimate means of diagnosis\, we are seeing a sudden increase in clients that identify as Autistic and/or an ADHDer. We find that clients are speaking up and finding validation of what they have always known: their brains operate differently than the brains of their peers\, colleagues\, friends\, and families. As a result\, we are seeing a sudden increase in the young adult and middle-aged population who identify as being Neurodivergent in a Neurotypical world. \nThis workshop series is designed to help clinicians build greater awareness and familiarity with ADHD and Autistic experiences. Participants will come away from this course with a deeper understanding of ADHD and Autism from the Neurodiversity-Affirming Paradigm that focuses on strengths and differences\, not diagnoses\, disorders\, and deficits. \nEspecially following the Covid pandemic and its sometimes long-term impact on the brain and the immune system’s inflammatory processes\, many clients report having different and often challenging sensory processing experiences. We are seeing more adults presenting in our offices with reports that they now have issues not only with taste and smell but with a range of visual\, hearing\, tactile\, balance\, and internal bodily sensations they never have before experienced\, as well as difficulties with attention and memory. This begs the question: have these brain differences always been there but now have been sensitized or magnified by exposure to Covid and months-long isolation? \nMany adults are now recognizing they are not alone and are demanding they not be dismissed or invalidated any longer\, often having experienced the continued frustration of providers questioning their own lived experiences and\, as a result\, having been either undiagnosed or underdiagnosed due to outdated and debunked diagnostic criteria still used by mainstream psychiatrists and physicians. These individuals are finding validation for what they have suspected all along: their brains work differently than those of their peers\, families\, and friends. \nWith new research available and an increasingly empowered clientele\, we see more than ever the need to remain current in our understanding of–and support for–those who have brain differences. Committed to blending cutting-edge scientific evidence with the lived experiences of our clients\, Cascadia Training\, is delighted to offer a new workshop series designed to help clinicians build greater awareness and familiarity with ADHD and Autistic experiences. \nUpon completion of this series\, participants will have a deeper understanding of ADHD and Autism from the Neurodiversity Affirming Paradigm that focuses on strengths and differences\, not disorders\, diagnoses\, and deficits! \nWoven throughout the series are the law and ethics of working with neurodivergent clients\, including the danger of misdiagnoses\, and the harm of using biased\, outdated\, debunked diagnostic criteria leading to the under-diagnosis of ADHD and Autism spectrum experiences. In addition\, participants will learn about and identify pathologizing\, stigmatizing\, and harmful treatment protocols and clinical interventions still utilized by providers in educational\, physical\, and mental health professions. \nThis series uses a system developed explicitly by B Lourenco\, an expert on ADHD and Autism. The course focuses to a large degree on the internal\, lived experience of neurodiversity. Each of the six weekly sessions will include a didactic portion\, an experiential section\, and direct case consultation time. All modules will include lecture\, video\, and experiential segments. \nCertificate Program Weekly Modules: \nWeek One:  Sensory Systems  – Getting in touch with the sensory system is the most critical step in supporting neurodivergent clients. Sensory information can regulate emotional and physical experiences. In addition\, we will focus on using sensory profiles\, menus\, and diets to support day-to-day quality of life. \nWeek Two: Communication and Relationships – Understanding how those with Autism and ADHD communicate creates room for therapeutic connection. With this understanding\, we will dive into tools for managing meltdowns and shutdowns in an affirming way. \nWeek Three:  Attending and Executive Function – This module will explain why those with Autism and ADHD face challenges attending to their environment by addressing social expectations on perceptions of “functioning.” You will also learn how to use the client’s natural rhythms to support positive functionality. \nWeek Four:  Social Systems and Disability – Understanding how society directly impacts the lives of people with disabilities. We will focus on how clinicians can incorporate advocacy into their practice and tools to unlearn neurotypical values by connecting clients to personal values. \nWeek Five: Differentials and Comorbidities – This module will teach participants how to rule out or “dial in” on other mental health concerns or diagnoses. We will present comorbidities that exist with your neurodivergent clients and how to effectively support them in a non-stigmatizing way. The role of trauma and grief in the lived experience of clients who identify as neurodivergent will be discussed\, as well as the impact of these events on the developing brain. We will process how to best support the grief and disenfranchised losses felt by our autistic and ADHD clients and their families. \nWeek Six: The Use of Joy As a Tool Against Oppression. Creating celebrations of being neurodivergent and finding joy in everyday life as we partner with our neurodivergent clients. The Neurodivergent-affirming certificate program series will conclude with various celebrations we can share with our clients and the shift to viewing “joy itself as a tool against oppression.” As clinicians\, it is important for us to first comprehend–and then share– the ways that society benefits from neurodiversity in general and ADHD and Autism\, in particular. We will conclude by learning ways to help our clients celebrate their neurodiversity and see themselves through an affirming\, strengths-based lens. \nOther topics that will be covered in this practice- and life-altering certificate program series include\, but are not limited to: \n\nAlexithymia and Dysthymia\nARFID\nMisophonia\nGender and sexuality in the ADHD and Autistic communities\nThe role of menstruation on ADHD and Autistic brains\nInterdependence vs codependence and/or independence\nMyths and stigmas about neurodivergent people\nExperiences of abuse in neurodivergent people\nPervasive Desire for Autonomy (PDA)\n\n***Payment Options:\nCascadia Training values quality continuing education that is accessible\, inclusive\, and without barriers to all. We never want the cost of our workshops to be a barrier to attending one of our workshops\, particularly our multi-session workshops. \nWe offer several options to make our workshops cost-inclusive: payment plans\, a limited number of full and partial scholarships\, discounts for students\, and discounts for early professionals. SUMMARY:Motivational Interviewing: Improving Client Outcomes by Increasing Intrinsic Motivation for Change
DESCRIPTION:Motivational Interviewing: Improving Client Outcomes by Increasing Intrinsic Motivation for Change\nPresented by: Randi Jensen\, MA\, LMHC\, CCDC\nWhen: Thursday\, May 21st\, 2026 | 9:00 am – 4:30 pm Pacific Time\nWhere: Live on Zoom. You will receive your Zoom link/invitation the week of the workshop.\nContinuing Education Credit Hours: 6 CEs | $190.00\nMotivational Interviewing (MI) is an established evidence-based practice renowned for resolving ambivalence. MI\, which originates in substance use disorder treatment\, has been shown to enhance client motivation for change and improve treatment outcomes.  The spirit of MI complements Self-Determination Theory (SDI)\, which asserts that people have an intrinsic desire to make life changes congruent with their core values. SDI states that people are more likely to be internally motivated if their actions\, beliefs\, and core values align.  Motivational Interviewing provides the technique to make that happen. \nThe principles of Motivational Interviewing include providing accurate empathy\, building discrepancy\, rolling with resistance\, and increasing self-efficacy. These supply the basis for building intrinsic motivation for change and can facilitate the resolution of life-threatening ambivalence in suicidality. \nResearchers Britton\, Williams\, and Connor (2008) show how the therapist’s proficiency in Motivational Interviewing can resolve a client’s ambivalence and resistance to change. \nThis very practical workshop includes learning through lectures\, interactive discussions\, demonstrations\, video role plays\, and skill-building through group exercises. These methods combine to provide techniques and interventions that can be applied immediately. \nObjectives:\n• Describe the principles that underpin Motivational Interviewing and how they promote client autonomy \n• Articulate the distinguishing techniques of open-ended questions\, affirmations\, reflective listening\, and summarizations \n• Explain the Stages of Change as described by Prochaska and DiClemente (1983) \n• Discuss the significance of Self-Determination Theory in coordination with MI \n• Distinguish different methods of using MI with specific populations and varied disorders \n• Express and practice Motivational Interviewing techniques used in counseling suicidal individuals \n• Describe ethical considerations and documentation \n• Enumerate necessary therapist qualities that support the efficient use of MI \nRandi is an expert in both using and teaching Motivational Interviewing. In addition to her many years of presenting Cascadia Training workshops\, she taught Motivational Interviewing courses as an adjunct faculty member at Bastyr University and as Case Management Program Director for Antioch University and Seattle’s Job Initiative. She also uses her expert-level skills in Motivational Interviewing in her private practice\, specializing in treating clients with suicidality\, suicide ideation\, substance use disorders\, and more. \nREGISTER HERE\n  \n
