The Washington State Department of Health has approved this 6-hour workshop for its 2022 Model List. This workshop also satisfies the continuing education requirements set by the Department of Health related to suicide assessment\, management\, and treatment.\nHistorically\, mental health treatment for suicidal individuals has involved extensive psychopharmacology\, repeated cognitive behavioral therapy\, positive psychology methods\, stress reduction exercises\, and/or deep therapy into family-of-origin issues\, all proven individually insufficient for the long-term prevention of suicide and suicidality. \nThe World Health Organization (2019) reported decreasing trends in suicide mortality in most countries across the world. Unfortunately\, the mortality of suicide showed an increasing trend in the United States. Between 2000 and 2018\, the suicide rate skyrocketed\, increasing by a whopping 35% (CDC\, 2020). Interestingly\, during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic\, between 2020 and 2021\, there was a decrease in suicide rates. This was short-lived\, unfortunately\, as suicide rates began to increase again by 2% in 2022 (CDC\, 2022). \nWhat can we do? As clinicians\, we need to understand there are many roads to suicidality — each usually requiring individual intervention. \nThis workshop presents original concepts in the development of suicidality as an ingenious coping mechanism that develops over time. The brain’s neuroplasticity forms neural pathways that underpin the reinforcing suicidal thought pattern. Brain retraining provides the formation of new healthy neural pathways. The healing process is directed\, encouraged\, and supported through a specifically designed peer protocol based on existing evidence-based social support. \nResearch shows that the first suicide attempt is often the first time anyone intervenes. However\, it is generally not the first time the danger has been known. Loved ones just don’t know what to do. They take the suicidal individual to a hospital or professional where the treatment protocol has not changed for decades. When the suicidal individual comes home after the attempt\, family and friends don’t know how to help prevent the next one. The Jensen Suicide Peer Protocol (JSP3)\, based on evidence-based principles\, is a prescribed method for the family members and concerned others to take an active part in the recovery of their loved one. Whether by choice (“pull factors” that attract immigrants to the U.S.) or by necessity (“push factors” that necessitate migration out of their home countries)\, immigrants face a host of psychological and socioeconomic challenges and stressors during and after migrating. These profoundly affect their mental health and quality of life (Shea & Wong\, 2022). \nLicensed Clinical-Community Psychologist Dr. Gitika Talwar created and will present this workshop\, drawing on her personal experience as a first-generation immigrant and immigration activist and her professional experience working with international students\, first-generation immigrants\, refugees\, and asylum seekers in the United States. How\, then\, do therapists help clients heal body shame in a weight-obsessed world when our culture is obsessed with weight being an indicator of health?   This course introduces therapists to practical resources\, knowledge\, empowering interventions\, and the language needed to help challenge weight stigma\, connect weight stigma and negative health outcomes\, and support clients toward weight-neutral and compassionate self-care. \nMany providers have increased their awareness of the need to adjust their practice lens and use a more weight-inclusive\, fat-positive approach to addressing food and body issues. Mental health clinicians have become increasingly aware of the expanding body of research that says intentional weight loss and dieting just don’t work\, and find themselves no longer ethically comfortable participating in diet culture. Therapists understand that supporting clients in weight loss or lifestyle changes (even for health reasons) is frequently emotionally and metabolically damaging\, is not trauma-informed\, often results in eating disorders and poor health outcomes\, and is rooted in weight bias and the body hierarchy.  Ethical\, culturally competent mental health practitioners want to know how to help their clients have a more peaceful relationship with food and their bodies.  However\, even the best-intentioned clinician finds that the cultural climate of weight stigma is so prevalent in both medical and mental health fields that they don’t even know where to begin. \nThis course will help therapists have conversations about bodies\, weight\, and health without contributing to the body shaming and size bias that is commonplace in healthcare settings. MI\, which originates in substance use disorder treatment\, has been shown to enhance client motivation for change and improve treatment outcomes.  The spirit of MI complements Self-Determination Theory (SDI)\, which asserts that people have an intrinsic desire to make life changes congruent with their core values.
